Typical epiphragms of the Liguus
The mucous seal or epiphragm of the Liguus is their seal, during hibernation
or aestivation periods, to prevent dessication. The bark shows an attached discarded
epiphragm where a Liguus aestivated in the dry season or winter. The
epiphragm is very resistant to external water or moisture and lasts
for some time without deterioration.
